JUROR STATEMENT

It is an honor to be the 51st juror of the Hawai’i Craftsmen Annual Statewide Exhibition! I am excited to have the opportunity to visit many of the neighbor islands as a juror, and am a strong champion of exhibitions and programs such as this that bring our state-wide creative community together. It generally feels that each island operates independently, and far too often exhibitions and programs are O’ahu-centric. Although my professional career in the arts has largely been centered on contemporary art, I have a deep appreciation of craft that I was introduced to at a young age growing up in Hawai’i. In recent years, I have become particularly enthusiastic about the growing synergies between contemporary art and craftsmanship; I firmly believe some of the strongest amalgamations of contemporary art and craft are coming out of our local creative community. As a juror, I am particularly interested in the relationship between traditional techniques and materials, reimagined with an innovative, original aesthetic. Creating forward-thinking, inventive pieces, yet looking to and honoring the past (heritage, history, tradition) as a point of inspiration has always been of great fascination for me and will absolutely be something that will resonate strongly when jurying.

Featured Artists

Each year Hawai‛i Craftsmen recognizes members who represent various media with their artistic excellence and who have made great contributions to Hawai’i Craftsmen, and the Hawai‛i art community at large. This year, the Hawai‛i Craftsmen Board of Directors has invited Boris Huang (lei hulu, O’ahu)  and Jennifer Owen (ceramics, Maui) as honored guest artists in the exhibition.

BORIS HUANG

Boris creates original lei hulu patterns using different colored feathers, (both dyed and natural) from many types of bird. His styles range from traditional to contemporary designs. It is Boris’ endeavor to bestow upon the viewer the ability to see and feel the thought and emotion which inspire the artworks. It’s very important to note that his feather artworks differ from others in that the skill he has so highly refined originates in the very traditional Hawaiian techniques. But is also inspired and influenced by his own native Taiwanese heritage. Every choice of color and placement of the materials has deep symbology and significance… Boris has received many awards and participated in a number of public events. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts; Honolulu Museum of Art, and in private collections locally and abroad.

JENNIFER OWEN

Jennifer Owen has been Associate Professor of art at University of Hawaii Maui College for the past 21 years. Three of her ceramic sculptures are in the collection of the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and her work has been juried into shows nationally and internationally.

Known for her wide range of styles and techniques, Owen's recent works are inspired by architectural form.  After many years of drawing inspiration from nature, she is bringing the organic vitality and movement of nature to architectural forms.  She delights in imbuing her sculptures with a dynamic quality that animates the work.  Equally comfortable with throwing  and hand building, Owen uses varied techniques to keep the work and her studio practice exciting.
