Friday March 27 Workshop 2400 Fahrenheit Glass Maximum enrollment 8 This three-day intensive will methodically piece together the steps necessary to make tumblers, bowls and bottles in clear glass. On day one, we will revisit the tumbler, focusing on thinness, puntys, and working efficiently. Day two will focus on the bowl. By simplifying the process, students will learn to make a variety of bowl forms while gaining confidence in the blowing process. Day three will explore the particular heating and shaping skills needed to form the bottle. Instruction will be personalized and detailed to your level of experience. Working efficiently, creating thinner pieces and building confidence will be the goals of the course. Intermediate course: Tuition Fees Non-Member $300 Membership Fees Individual $48 | Catherine Nash High Shrinkage Flax: A Paper Sculptor’s Dream Fiber Oahu Friday, Saturday, Sunday March 20, 21, 22 Workshop Honolulu Museum of Art Spalding House Maximum enrollment 8 Materials List When beaten in a Hollander beater for 8-12 hours, the shrinkage rate of flax and abaca pulp increases tremendously. Sheets of freshly pulled paper can be stretched and connected over fabricated structures of wood. As the paper dries, the surface shrinks taut (and skin-like) to reveal the structure underneath. Other manipulations involve laminating thin twigs or bamboo between 2 sheets. As it dries, the paper shrinks into organic forms. This workshop includes the coloring of paper fiber using pigments: high shrinkage papers retain intense color value compared to other fibers and pulps beaten for shorter lengths of time. Combining Two Ancient Media: Paper & Encaustic Friday, Saturday, Sunday Workshop Honolulu Museum of Art Spalding House Catherine Nash Paper and Encaustic Workshop Supply List Combine encaustic and paper to create unique waxed based paintings, collage, assemblage and mixed media sculptural works. Learn how encaustic techniques offer a range of two and three-dimensional possibilities. Participants will draw and paint encaustic on papers, use encaustic to dip for translucency or encase an object, learn to use wax as an adhesive and layer it for visual depth, transfer photocopy imagery and much more using a wide variety of papers including recycled paper elements, old book pages, photographs, vintage letters and envelopes, magazine imagery, and small objects. Explore the sculptural potential of integrating paper and encaustic: designing folded, cut, or embossed sheets as a springboard to creating three-dimensional unique constructions. We will be learning how to glue Japanese mulberry paper to lashed wooden armatures and how to fuse onto both convex and concave surfaces creating structures that range in form from the organic to architectural. Complete a series of small studio constructions that will inspire and ignite diverse sculptural ideas.

Over the course of the workshop, she will explain her process, starting with how she makes the clay, sourcing materials, and the remarkable building capabilities paper clay provides. Additionally she will demonstrate the process used in creating her own sculptures and discuss her inspiration, concept and the dialogue she hopes to inspire through her work.
